The tale behind Tale of Scales

Just a school project?

The deck of cards itself began as an assignment for a high school Graphic Design class. From there, I launched a Kickstarter campaign to have several sets printed, and organized for funds to be donated to wildlife conservation and education efforts.

Balancing the scales

Reptiles and amphibians, like many animals today, are facing the effects of climate change and habitat loss. However, they don’t get the same publicity that the polar bears or rhinos do. Roti-Island snake-necked turtles are critically endangered, but many people have never heard of them.

OK, but why playing cards?

Playing cards are easy to transport, and often pass through the hands of many people. This frequent movement allows for more people to be exposed to the artwork on the cards.
The deck contains all sorts of herpetofauna (the collective term for reptiles and amphibians). Some of them are critically endangered, and some are invasive species. Each one was chosen for a reason. For example, the ace of hearts— the mourning gecko— was chosen because they can reproduce without a partner. As a result, the species is predominantly female.
Every time a game is played with these cards, your players will be exposed to a variety of reptiles and amphibians. Every card has a unique illustration that depicts the animals as they would be found in the wild. Maybe someone will discover their new favorite turtle, or decide to learn more about “that cool looking snake with horns”.
